Minecraft biomes are vast, varied, and full of things you definitely need. As each world in Minecraft is randomly generated, there are never any guarantees about where you'll find the Minecraft biome you're looking for, but there might be clues you can follow if you pay close enough attention.

It's worth exploring above ground to locate the Minecraft biomes close to your spawn location. Each one provides different resources that may be needed in your journey. Each biome has its own creatures, NPCs and loot. This means that while not all of them are necessary for your progress, they might be a little easier to find.

It can be difficult to remember all the Minecraft biomes and what they contain. There aren't many people who can remember every detail in a game. That's why we've gone ahead and put them into one handy-dandy article for you to peruse at your leisure and find whatever you need to know.

Minecraft Biomes

These are all the primary biomes for Minecraft:

Plains Swamp Forest Dark Forest Jungle Taiga Snowy Tundra Desert Badlands Savanna Mushroom Fields Mountains Caves Ocean

Plains

Plains are probably the most basic biome, and you'll be seeing them the most. These plains offer large areas with grass and dirt to build on or dig into, as well numerous farm animals and villages. There's also a subtype of plains called sunflower plains, which is - shockingly - full of sunflowers.

Swamp

Swamps look a lot like plains but have more trees and the water will be slightly off-colour. You can easily find clay here thanks to all the shallow water, and you can also find both slimes and witch huts in swamps. This is also a great place for a Minecraft slime farm.

Forest

Forest biomes contain a lot of trees. There are animals, but most forests are used to grow wood. There are many varieties of oak trees in forests. However, you can also find birch tree variants. There is no difference in the actual blocks made.

There's also a flower forest' option, which is basically the exact same thing but with lots of pretty flowers and more likely to be found Minecraft bees.

Dark Forest

Dark forests are full of massive trees and, often, huge mushrooms. This biome is more dangerous than normal forests because it lacks light. Hostile Minecraft mobs can spawn in this biome. However, this biome can also produce a woodland mansion.

Jungle

Jungles are full of huge towering trees covered in vines, and can be a great place to find unique resources. Along with ocelots, this is the place where you can find cocoa pods and melons, making this biome a useful source of food. Sometimes you will also find jungle temples there, which are fun little dungeons with lots of loot and stone.

Taiga

The taiga features yet more trees, but this time it's the noble spruce tree. This biome is extremely hilly and you will often see wolves and foxes roaming about. Sugar cane can also be found here. Another variant of the Taiga is covered in snow. It doesn't contain sugar cane, but it does have frozen waters. The 'Great Tree Taiga is another variation of the taiga that has mushrooms and thicker plants. minecraft

Snowy Tundra

Snowy tundras are covered by ice and snow. These areas have a similar underlying structure to plains, but they are much more colder. Snowy tundras are covered with snow, which is a substitute for rain. You'll also find scattered spruce trees, roaming wolves, and snowy tundras that have snow falling. The 'Ice Spikes Plains' Minecraft biome is covered with spikes made of packed ice. This is a great place to host your Minecraft Christmas.

You might be surprised to know that deserts are rich in sandstone and sand. You may also find desert wells or desert temples. Although it's not the most exciting part of the game, you can still make glass from sand if you want to build a Minecraft building with windows. Servers

Badlands

The badlands look a lot like deserts but are red. Their colour comes from the combination of clay and red blocks in their makeup. They are often without life, except for the occasional cactus. Sometimes, you will find mineshafts beneath the surface of badlands that have rails and a few other useful items.

Savanna

Savannas can be found in the vicinity of either deserts and badlands. It is a kind o' middle ground between the more vibrant plains as well as the more savage wastelands. Acacia trees are not the only thing you will find. CRAFTING You will also find villages, horses and even llamas. It also never rains here, which is nice.

Mushroom Fields

Mushroom fields are strange islands usually away from the main landmass of any given world, that are covered in a variant of dirt called mycelium. You can find giant mushrooms here, along with a mob called a mooshroom, which is a cow made of mushrooms that you should protect/destroy at all costs because it is cute/deeply haunting.

Mountains

Mountains are home to huge stone hills, which often hide hidden caves. These can lead to some of most spectacular sights in the game. You will find waterfalls, lava waterfalls, deep valleys, and huge cliffs all over the area. This biome is ideal for early-game access, as the caves which spawn here are often visible from afar.

Caves

Caves are often labyrinthine underground areas that can be found filled with different types of ore, lots of enemies, as well as a variety o the other materials.

There are many types of them. The Minecraft The Wild update introduced new ones, such as the deep dark' which is home the Warden boss and the large 'dripstone caverns' that can hold rivers. You can also find 'lush caves' which are filled with plantlife. Caves are another great place to find amethyst.

Ocean

The ocean is a huge mass of water, which surprises no one. It's genuinely huge, and is full of aquatic animals which vary depending on how deep you are and also how warm or cold it is. The deep ocean is a variant that goes much deeper, but can also have abandoned mineshafts, ocean monuments, and other opportunities for exploration provided you can hold your breath for long enough.

We recommend making potions to aid with that. While you're there, be sure to keep an eye out also for the Minecraft trident!

You can find your Minecraft biome here

Are you looking for a specific biome in your Minecraft seeds? To locate the nearest Minecraft Java edition biome, you can use Minecraft's biome finder command. Just type /locatebiome to open the chat window. You'll be given the coordinates of the biome. These coordinates can be used to teleport or walk you there.

If you search in your current dimensions for a biome, it will not be found or is not near you. The game will inform you that it "couldn’t find [biome] in reasonable range."

This is everything you need about Minecraft Biomes. As major updates are made, new biomes and biome variations are often added.
